DESIGN EVENTS WITH A CULTIVATION PURPOSE

@everyone Many nonprofit events are primarily expenses with a secondary revenue function. Reframe events as relationship-building opportunities that also happen to raise money. Who are the 10 most important people you want to deepen a relationship with, and how does every element of the event serve that goal?

Events that feel meaningful - where donors feel seen, connected to mission, and inspired rather than just sold to - generate far more long-term value than transactional galas. Design the program, seating, and follow-up with cultivation in mind, not just check sizes.

CREATE A SUCCESSION PLAN

@everyone Many nonprofits are one resignation away from crisis - particularly if the executive director or a key program lead holds all the institutional knowledge. A succession plan doesn't mean expecting people to leave; it means ensuring the mission can outlast any individual.

Document critical processes, cross-train staff on key functions, and identify internal leaders who could step up. Even a basic plan reduces panic and board anxiety when transitions happen, as they always eventually do.

PAY PEOPLE FAIRLY EVEN IN MISSION-DRIVEN WORK

@everyone Compensation below market rate is one of the primary drivers of nonprofit burnout and turnover. The passion tax - the expectation that people will accept lower pay because they love the mission - is a harmful cultural norm that falls hardest on workers from lower-income backgrounds.

Conduct a market compensation analysis every two years and publish a clear pay philosophy. Advocate with funders for salaries in your grant budgets. When you lose good people because you can't afford to keep them, the mission suffers far more than it would have if you'd budgeted appropriately for talent.
